A four day interdisciplinary art event at the historic Enys Gardens. Curated by Kate Ogley and Timothy Crowley. Set within the empty Victorian mansion and gardens, it featured performance art, installation, interactive and generative sound work and film, constellated within an art trail.

The artwork reflected on how buildings and spaces bear witness to what we no longer can know and the ways in which these secrets may be intimated within the site. It offered audiences the opportunity to engage with new interactive artwork and a series of creative and educational workshops. We chose 10 artists that put participation at the core of their work. The artist were Timothy Crowley, Kate Ogley, Zierle & Carter, Belinda Whiting, Frances Williams, Katie Etheridge and Simon Persighetti, Jane Bailey, Rob Gawthrop, Chantal Brooks, Kate Southworth.

Zierle & Carter 2014 Deep Waters Zierle & Carter _ Zierle & Carter 2014 Deep Waters Zierle & Carter

Deep Waters is a process-led performance by Zierle & Carter, which will slowly unfold over the duration of two days inspired by the multi-layered roles the flow of water played in the story of Enys, investigating contrasting relationships of destructive and protective forces, sickness and healing, ultimately leading to transformation.

Frances Williams 2014 Pond Lifes Frances Williams _ Frances Williams 2014 Pond Lifes Frances Williams

Pond lifes is an experiment alluding to Kabakovs total installation along the path by the pond in Enys Gardens with a guide map. Objects and tableaus are installed in an attempt to set up material conditions that may provoke an affect of an absent person.

Belinda Whiting 2014 Inside/Outside Belinda Whiting _ Belinda Whiting 2014 Inside/Outside Belinda Whiting

Inside/Outside is a series of photographs showing interior views of the house, displayed outside on the exterior walls of the walled garden. The images have been printed onto reclaimed slates saved from the derelict outbuildings. (The printing method uses the silver gelatin process).

Kate Southworth 2014 Thunder, Arousing Kate Southworth _ Kate Southworth 2014 Thunder, Arousing Kate Southworth

Thunder, Arousing is a spell to re-awaken the life force, to kindle the dormant hope, that which was thought lost. Trembling, arousing, rising electricity. Through mutual sensitivity an inner sureness may emerge to cut through the vital storm.

A magic bead placed in a pocket, the spell enacted.

Kate Ogley 2014 Lineage Kate Ogley _ Kate Ogley 2014 Lineage Kate Ogley

The moths genetic lineage is one of the most ancient and remarkable in nature. The film observes the nocturnal rituals involved in the collection, identification and recording of moths by moth expert Tony James and his wife Pat, who travel the world researching moths and other insects.

Rob Gawthrop 2014 Ring Noises In Rob Gawthrop _ Rob Gawthrop 2014 Ring Noises In Rob Gawthrop

Ring Noises In is a sound installation concerning listening in the acoustic space of Enys House, alluding to the old servant bell-call system. Acoustic bell-like percussion in first-floor rooms is played using timed electric motors. The ringing is sent to the hall, where it is quietly amplified and heard in combination.

Katie Etheridge & Simon Persighetti 2014 The Tender Room Katie Etheridge & Simon Persighetti _ Katie Etheridge & Simon Persighetti 2014 The Tender Room Katie Etheridge & Simon Persighetti

Throughout their time in The Tender Room the artists will explore the exotic and will evoke ideas around the trade of seeds and plants such as between Cornwall and New Zealand. They will tend the garden, weaving nests of weeds and speaking tender words about extinct creatures.

Timothy Crowley 2014 Bulb Timothy Crowley _ Timothy Crowley 2014 Elvis in Morecambe Timothy Crowley

Bulb offers audiences a musical experience that arises from below the ground. It plays a prerecorded 20 minute composition followed by a two minutes silence designed to frame in some way our experience of the surroundings. The piece relates tonally with natural colours of the garden.

Elvis in Morecambe plays on the notion of how spaces may be repositories for our own memories and recollections and the ways in which we never quite escape them. A speaker hidden within a wall cavity of a disused Victorian mansion plays the voice of the artist recalling a fantastical story from his childhood, transposing his story of home into the fabric of Enys house so that the walls resound with dreams of elsewhere.

Chantal Brooks 2014 Beneath Chantal Brooks _ Chantal Brooks 2014 Beneath Chantal Brooks

Beneath the patterned wallpaper, the clink of china cups,
the clocks tick,
the polished stairwells,
the floorboards,
the wainscot
the starched collar
and tight buttoned jacket. Beneath root and farrow, the wheal and cable,
the lode, vein and ore
the wooden ribs and granite
All is darkness and stifled breath

Jane Bailey 2014 Lazy tremblings of the summer air Jane Bailey _ Jane Bailey 2014 Lazy tremblings of the summer air Jane Bailey

Acoustic interventions, informed by historic Enys, call visitors to tune in to the elusive tremblings of Enys gardens unique sound space. Experimentations in listening, mimicry and dueting with the environment, transmitted at points around the gardens, invite visitors to explore their own auditory interconnections and, if they wish, contribute to this ongoing dialogue.
